When I was 9, my grandparents took my mom, my brother and sister, and me on a cross-country road trip: South Carolina to California, up to Washington, and back. Parts of this trip included the famous (my introduction to) Route 66, and it was this experience that sparked my love of travel and began my journey as a storyteller. My grandmother taught me how to organize and label postcards to keep my memories of the trip, and I burned through so much film snapping photos that my mom had to refuse to buy me anymore due to costs. (sorry, mom!)
Over a decade later, I’d see Route 66 again when my mom and I packed up my blue Honda Accord and drove once more from South Carolina to California to start my career in the film and TV industry. It was then I learned this famous highway had another name, the “Mother Road,” and the idea was planted to return for another mother-daughter adventure.
I’m very lucky to have such supportive parents and to have such a unique and close relationship with my mom. She’s my travel buddy and my best friend–not to mention college roommate! I’m the youngest of four and when I went to college, my mom decided to go back as well. We received degrees from Clemson University and I decorated our graduation caps to read “mama moose” and “baby moose.”We are so excited to take this journey together on the 100th anniversary of Route 66, which also coincides with America’s 250th! I’m looking forward to exploring our nation’s history, meeting those along the route who make up its legacy, and reflecting on the symbolic parallel journey of life.
